Plagiarism Using AI: A Serious Threat to Academic Integrity

Plagiarism is the act of using someone else's words or ideas without giving proper credit or acknowledgment. It is a form of academic dishonesty that can have serious consequences, such as failing a course, losing a scholarship, or facing disciplinary action.



However, plagiarism is not always easy to detect or prevent. With the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, such as natural language generation (NLG) and natural language processing (NLP), it is possible to create and manipulate text in ways that are indistinguishable from human writing.


AI tools can help students and researchers with writing tasks, such as summarizing, paraphrasing, or generating content. However, they can also be misused for plagiarism purposes, such as copying and pasting text from online sources and modifying it with AI, or using AI to generate text from scratch based on keywords or prompts.


This type of plagiarism using AI poses a serious threat to academic integrity, as it can evade traditional detection methods, such as plagiarism checkers or human reviewers. Moreover, it can undermine the value and quality of academic work, as it can compromise originality, creativity, and critical thinking.


Therefore, it is important for educators and students to be aware of the potential risks and challenges of plagiarism using AI, and to take appropriate measures to prevent and combat it. Some possible strategies include:


- Educating students about the ethical and academic implications of plagiarism using AI, and fostering a culture of honesty and responsibility.

- Developing clear and consistent policies and guidelines on the acceptable use of AI tools for academic writing, and enforcing them with sanctions and penalties.

- Using multiple sources of evidence and assessment methods to evaluate students' work, such as oral presentations, peer reviews, or online proctoring.

- Updating and improving plagiarism detection tools and techniques to cope with the evolving nature of AI-generated text, such as using stylometric analysis or semantic similarity measures.

By raising awareness and taking preventive measures, we can ensure that academic writing remains a valuable and meaningful activity that reflects the true abilities and contributions of students and researchers.
